Aqiqah – Celebrate the Birth of Your Child
the birth of a child in any family is a joyous occasion. Everyone loves it.
Parents, Grandparents, Siblings, Cousins and Friends and Neighbours everyone congratulates and shows their happiness upon the arrival of the new born.
What is the best way to celebrate the new arrival than to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad by performing Aqiqah.
What is Aqiqah?
Aqiqah, is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on the occasion of child birth and remove the hair. It was narrated from Salmaan ibn ‘Aamir al-Dabbi that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:
“ Aqeeqah is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and remove all dirt from him.”
Shaving of the baby’s hair: the hair must be weighed, and the sadaqah given is dependant upon the rate of silver on the day (donors must do the calculations themselves).
What is the Purpose of Aqiqah?
When a child is born, an Aqiqah must be given by the parents/guardian as a gesture of thanks to Allah (SWT), protection from Shaytaan, expiation of sins and preventing any calamities, inshaAllah. With regard to the purpose of the ‘aqeeqah, it was mentioned in a hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):
“Every child is in pledge for his ‘aqeeqah.”
This should be performed seven days after the birth of the child – or failing that, every subsequent seven days before the child is mature – based on the Islamic lunar calendar.
